Chalazion

A chronic non-infective granulamatous inflammation of the meibomian gland is called chalazion. It is also called a tarsal or meibomian cyst.

Predisposing Faactors
1. Common in children and young adult
2. Habitual rubbing of the eye
3. Diabetes Mellitus
4. Metabolic factors
5. Excessive intake of carbohydrate & alcohol

Clinical Features
1. Painless swelling of the lid
2. Swelling away from lid mmargin
On Examination :-
A. Small, firm to hard swelling
B. Away from lid margin
C. Non-tender
D. red, purple, grayish or yellowish spot seen on conjunctival side.

Clinical Course & Complications
1. Spontaneous resolution
2. Slowly increase in size
3. May burst on conjunctival lids
4. Secondary infection
5. Calcification
6. Malignant change - rare in elderly

Treatment
1. Conservative :-
- Hot formentation
- Topical antibiotic Drugs
- NSAIDs
2. Intralesional injection of long standing steroid (triamcinolone)
3. Incision & Curettage
