Miliaria (Sweat Rash)

         Miliaria is a very common skin condition in newborns. It is also called Sweat Rash or Pricky Heat. It is a group of disorders characterized by closure of the ducts of the endocrine sweat glands resulting in sweat retention at various levels.

Classification
1. Miliaria Crystalina
2. Miliaria Rubra
3. Miliaria Profunda

Clinical Menifestation
Miliaria Crystalina :
- Occurs when sweating is profuse and high grade fever
- Appears as tiny crystalline vesicles on a apparently normal skin
- Size 1-2 mm in diameter
- Located in flexural areas.
Miliaria Rubra :
- Site trunk, neck
- Seen in hot and humid climate
- Usually in infants with occlusive clothing
- May be pruritic
Miliaria Profunda :
- Produced by severe attack of maliaria rubra leading to severe damage to the duct
- Occurs as skin colored papule 1-3 mm diameter

Diagnosis
1. Mainly clinical features
2. In case of doubt histopathology may be useful

Treatment
1. Place the patient in cool environment
2. Avoidance of occlussive clothing
3. Application of calamine lotion/ointment for soothing
4. cool bath
5. Eucalyptus Oil has beneficial properties that help protect irritated skin, and help relieve surface discomfort and swelling.
6. Peppermint Oil has been used for centuries to naturally soothe skin soreness and itch.
